Polyamorous relationships in change and negotiation : A qualitative study of how polyamorous people experience, cope and negotiate change (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Polyamorous people often become misunderstood and excluded due to society's monogamous ideal. Nor are there many studies on the subject and the studies that do exist focus mainly on stigma. Polyamorous relationships are, to a higher degree, more changeable and norm-breaking in relation to monogamous norms. Against this background we have therefore chosen to conduct a qualitative interview study with a social psychological approach. The purpose was to explore self identified polyamorous individuals experiences and management of changes in their romantic relationships. We also intended to explore how polyamorous people adjust to a monogamous relationship ideal during negotiation and how they negotiate relationship structure. Ten semi structured interviews were conducted with people over 18 who had been polyamorous for at least two years and were in at least one or several relationships. The data was analyzed with a thematic analysis method. The study's results show that the respondents had varied experiences of negative and positive emotions due to changes in their polyamorous context. They manage change mainly through communication but also through support, avoidance, self-comfort, acceptance and focus on the relationship. Feelings and management during change depend on how the individual interprets the context. A few respondents also described that they occasionally concealed their polyamorous identity because of a monogamous relationship ideal. Otherwise they did not feel affected by a monogamous relationship ideal in their relationship negotiations. In which way the people are guided by the ideal seems to depend on the interpretation the individual makes of the context.
