School nurses´experiences of working with sexual and reproductive health and rights with adolesecents : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is a component of adolescent health, which is generally good but varies at group level. Criticism has been directed at the school's subject-integrated teaching, where student health is not sufficiently involved. School nurses can potentially strengthen young people's sexual and reproductive health and rights. Aim: Investigate school nurses' experiences of working with sexual and reproductive health and rights with adolescents. Method: Semistructured interviews were conducted with eight school nurses, then analyzed according to qualitative content analysis. Findings: Three main categories with subcategories were identified: Student-centered work of school nurses: The health conversation – a cautious entry into SRHR. Group teaching - large variations in scope and content. Open reception - opportunity for young people to talk about SRHR. Collaboration in school: Collaboration with teachers is governed by teachers' wishes and needs. The student health team – collaboration with potential for improvement. Youth reception – support function with varying collaboration. School nurses' prerequisites for working with SRHR: Knowledge - cornerstones for working with the area. Interest, commitment, feelings and values affect the work. Unclear frameworks place high demands on school nurses. Conclusion: School nurses' experiences of working with SRHR with adolescents vary in scope and content. Creating trusting relationships and inclusive environments are described as success factors. Cooperation with teachers takes place based on teachers' needs or on the initiative of school nurses, while at the same time school nurses' responsibilities and tasks are perceived as unclear. Interest in SRHR seems to control both the scope of the work and the inclination to seek new knowledge.
