School nurses' experience in promoting students' lifestyles : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Tio skolsköterskor deltog i studien.

Abstract [en]

Background: Children and adolescents' health and development are affected by lifestyle habits. Healthy lifestyle habits are fundamental for achieving good physical, mental, and social well-being for all individuals. School nurses play a central role in promoting and encouraging students' already healthy lifestyle habits and in identifying and guiding when unhealthy lifestyle habits are identified in students.

Aim: The aim is to investigate school nurses' experiences of health promotion work aimed at promoting students' lifestyles.

Method: A qualitative design with an inductive approach was used in the study. The data collection was carried out with semi-structured interviews and then analyzed according to qualitative content analysis. Ten school nurses participated.

Findings: The result of the analysis generated three categories and 10 subcategories. The results describe the school nurses' experience of health promotion work aimed at promoting students' lifestyles.

Conclusion: The results of the study show that school nurses' work in promoting students' lifestyles takes place both individually and in groups, the work takes place both inside and outside the school. The result makes it clear that school nurses' health promotion work around lifestyle focuses on the students right to achieve the best possible health and that the person-centred care permeates the school nurses’ work.
