”This might sting a little!” : School nurses' experiences of nursing measures when vaccinating children with needle fear (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Vaccination constitutes a significant part of the school nurse's professional practice and is crucial for promoting children's long-term health. It is common children have a fear of needles which may affect both the child’s vaccination experience and adherence to the childhood immunisation programme. School nurses can apply nursing measures to facilitate vaccinations for children with fear of needles. Aim: To describe school nurses' experiences of nursing measures during vaccination of children with fear of needles. Method: The study was performed with a qualitative inductive approach through computer-assisted interviews analyzed using content analysis. Findings: Analysis yielded three categories and seven subcategories, the categories consisted of To prepare for vaccination, To optimize the vaccination situation and To collaborate around pupils during vaccination. Conclusion: By adopting a child-centered approach and being flexible according to a child's needs, school nurses can often carry out vaccinations for students with a fear of needles. Collaboration with parents or other safe adults can provide security and potentially prevent future fear of needles.
