Care experiences from patients with HIV : A qualitative literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an incurable infectious disease that is transmitted through bodily fluids. Patients with HIV can slow down the virus' degradation of the immune system and reduce the transmissibility of the virus through a medical treatment that extends over their entire lives. There is also a lot of stigmatizations about the disease HIV. This stigma affects how people think and treat people with HIV. To provide good person-centered care, the nurse should overcome any prejudices related to stigma surrounding the HIV disease.

Aim: To illustrate how patients with HIV experience care.

Method: Literature review of qualitative studies.

Results: Several patients felt that there were shortcomings with how they were treated, how the healthcare professionals communicated and how their integrity was handled. Patients felt that many of these shortcomings were based on stigma surrounding HIV. Patients felt that good interpersonal relationships contributed to positive experiences of care.

Conclusion: Patients with HIV experience healthcare related relationships, communication, knowledge and integrity as important aspects in care. Patients appreciate it when healthcare professionals treat them with respect and understanding. It appears that healthcare professionals need to adapt how they treat and talk to their patients depending on the patient’s needs.
