Adults' experiences of living with an eating disorder : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Eating disorders are a mental illness that mainly affects young people but also adults. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the most common types of eating disorders, with anorexia having the highest risk of mortality. Eating disorder is a mental illness with visible physical symptoms that are easily focused on. The focus must be on the person and not just on weight and body.

Aim: The aim was to explore adults' experience of living with an eating disorder.

Method: The method used was a literature review where ten qualitative articles were selected and compiled into a new result according to five steps. The articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl and PubMed.

Findings: Eating disorder is a disease that puts life out of balance. It affects family and relationships as much as the person affected. The disease creates a mixture of emotions such as shame, anxiety and pride. Professional services are experienced both positively and negatively by those affected. A good treatment and confirmation of their feelings is important for their recovery.

Conclusion: There are preconceived notions about what age it is acceptable to suffer from an eating disorder. Adults are often judged for their illness and are treated differently compared to young people. Here it becomes the nurse´s responsibility to treat the patient without prejudice.
