Care recipients' experiences of palliative care at home : A qualitative literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Several patients prefer to receive palliative care in their own home in order to maintain a functioning everyday life. Gradually, palliative care has moved from hospitals to patients' homes, as the possibility of receiving medical help at home has increased.

Aim: The aim is to shed light on patients' experiences of receiving palliative care at home.

Method: Qualitative literature review, based on 10 scientific articles with a qualitative approach. The databases Cinahl and Medline were used in the search for articles, which were then analyzed based on Friberg's five-step analysis.

Findings: From the analysis, 6 subcategories and 3 categories emerged, which were Open your home for healthcare staff, The nurse's competence and The care recipient as a unique individual, which showed a number of different factors that determined how the experience of receiving palliative care at home would be.

Conclusion: This qualitative literature review contributes to increased understanding of the patient's experience in palliative care at home. The nurse needs to consider the patient's life world and work person-centred. When the nurse promotes a person-centred approach, conditions are created for the patient to feel like himself, before palliative care came into play.
