Games have proven themselves a capable storytelling medium. Some are known for their branching narratives, others for linear stories that make the player rethink how they view them. The software tools that enabled them should be studied. What might the future of dialogue tools look like? To answer this question one needs to assess the state of things. Keywords and explicit inclusion, exclusion and quality criteria were used in searches to ensure valid results with tools selected based on industry recommendations. Both literature and tools were then evaluated for common and unique elements. The future could well hold graph views with nodes dedicated to specific tasks with easily viewed and editable content, this is already happening. Animated timelines with generated content might form the baseline. Validation for the entire graph structure and variable integrity as well as saving traces. Future research could test elements raised here in, study writer backgrounds and investigate splitting of graphs into different views depending on developer need.
