Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Lidande drabbar alla människor, är en naturlig del av livet och påverkar både hälsa och välbefinnande. Hur lidande hanteras benämns som coping och genom copingstrategier kan lidande lindras. Sjuksköterskans omvårdnadsansvar innefattar att främja patienters hälsa och välbefinnande genom att förebygga ohälsa och lindra lidande.

Syfte: Att beskriva hur lidande och coping kommer till uttryck i människors livsberättelser.

Metod: Kvalitativ innehållsanalys av narrativer. I den analyserade litteraturen återfinns tolv olika berättelser skrivna av olika individer vilka beskriver livshändelser och hur lidande i berättelserna har påverkat individerna.

Resultat: Fem teman framkom varav tre teman beskriver lidande: Uttryck för emotionellt lidande, Uttryck för kroppsligt lidande och Barndomens betydelse för lidande. De andra två beskriver coping: Positiva copingstrategier och Negativa copingstrategier. Till temat Positiva copingstrategier tillkom tre underteman: Fysisk aktivitet, natur och kultur, Hjälpa sig själv genom att hjälpa andra samt Ta emot stöd.

Konklusion: Resultatet ger en fördjupad förståelse för hur lidande och coping är sammankopplade och ger sjuksköterskor kunskap om hur de i sin profession kan vara behjälpliga och stödja patienter genom lidandeprocessen för att erhålla bra copingstrategier och minska lidande.

Abstract [en]

Background: Suffering affects all people, is a natural part of life and affects both health and well-being. How suffering is handled is referred to as coping and through coping strategies, suffering can be reduced. The nursing responsibilities of the nurse includes promoting health and well-being of patients by preventing illness and ease suffering.

Aim: How suffering and coping are expressed in humans’ life stories.

Method: Qualitative content analysis of narratives. In the literature there are twelve different stories written by twelve different people who describe life events and how suffering in the stories has affected the individuals.

Results: Five themes emerged, of which three themes describe suffering: Expression of emotional suffering, Expression of physical suffering and Childhood's importance to suffering. The other two themes describe coping: Positive coping strategiesand Negative coping strategies. Three sub-themes were added to the theme Positive coping strategies: Physical activity, nature and culture, Helping oneself by helping others andReceiving support.

Conclusion: The result provides a deeper understanding of how suffering and coping are connected and gives nurses knowledge about how in their profession they helpful and support patients through the suffering process in order can beto obtain good coping strategies and reduce suffering.
