Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness affected many young adults and was experienced differently, it could mean temporary problems but also problems that affect one’s everyday life. Social media had both advantages and disadvantages when it came to mental illness. Lack of knowledge about mental illness led to stigmatization.

Aim: Investigate young women’s experience of seeking care for mental illness.

Method: A qualitative method has been used which is based on eight scientific articles.

Findings: It could be difficult for young women to recognize the psychological symptoms of mental illness, they could feel shame and fear about seeking care for mental illness. A lack of trust in care could be due to previous experiences. Young women could get symptom relief by seeking care. It could be easier to seek care for physical symptoms than psychological symptoms for young women. Support from relatives was an advantage for young women. Instead of addressing mental health issues, young women isolated themselves. The media was a great help for young woman to seek care.

Conclusion: Young women had different experiences of seeking care, there were negative aspects that made young woman not seek care. There were are also various positive aspects that made young woman dare to seek care.
