Older people's experiences of living with depression : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The global average life expectancy is increasing, which leads to an ageing society. Aging itself is a risk factor for depression, which can lead to poorer health for the elderly. To increase the quality of life and reduce the depressive symptoms, more focus on support for the elderly is needed. Lack of support can affect the everyday life of older people in a negative fashion and in turn lead to decreased quality of life.

Aim: Describe the experiences of daily life of diagnosed depressed elderly in the context of support from healthcare professionals.

Method: Literature review with analysis of six qualitative articles and five quantitative articles and one article with mixed methods.

Results: From the analysis three main categories were identified; impaired ability to cope on their own, negative thoughts about the future, need for increased engagement with six associated subcategories.

Conclusion: Loneliness and lack of proper support in daily life were factors that negatively impacted quality of life. The support that caregivers provided was found to be significant in coping with struggles in everyday life. To reduce the elderly's experiences of loneliness, more focus on adequate support is essential. With motivational talks and good care, the care staff can improve the elderly's view of the care system and therefore alleviate suffering and increase their quality of life.
