Physical activity as a treatment of metabolic syndrome : District nurses' experiences: A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The incidence of Metabolic syndrome is increasing in society and, increasingly, it is occuring at younger ages. It is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disease and premature death. Low levels of physical activity contribute to the development of Metabolic Syndrome. The District nurse within Primary care is most often the person who meets such patients first and they have an important role in the treatment of the problem. Aim: The aim is to describe district nurses’ experiences of physical activity as a treatment for people with metabolic syndrome. Method: A qualitative method with an inductive approach was used in ten qualitative interviews. The interview material was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Result: 2 catagories were identified: To see the broad perspective in the meeting with the person and To motivate and support. It was shown in the result that it was important to individually adapt the treatment and discussion to the patients and to not set goals that were too large. It was also important to create confidence between the patient and the district nurse in order to motivate and support the patient. Conclusion: To create lifestyle changes using physical activity in the case of metabolic syndrome takes time and it can be difficult. The person requires help, support and encouragement. Therefore it is vital to create a trusting relationship between the person and the district nurse.
