District nurses' experiences of palliative care at home : an interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]
Dessa delades in i sex subteman.
Abstract [en]
Background: The choice to receive end-of-life care in one's home environment is seen as a right. The work with palliative care in the home is seen by district nurses as rewarding but challenging. Aim: The aim was to investigate district nurses' experiences of caring for patients with palliative care at home. Method: A qualitative method was selected and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Ten interviews were held with district nurses in four different municipalities in Sweden. The data material was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three themes: Working with individualized nursing, Working in teams and Dealing with difficult situations and developing in one's profession. These were divided into six sub-themes. Conclusion: The study showed that district nurses' experiences and knowledge vary. It also emerged that the organizational structure with resources and support varied between the municipalities, which was considered by the authors to lead to an increased risk of unequal care.
