Life after stroke: A literature study based on autobiographies (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Stroke leads to lack of oxygen in the brain which in turn leads to loss of functions. The symptoms are determined by which vascular area in the brain has been affected by the stroke, by the time course and the extent of the injury. The rehabilitation of stroke patients is important for the patient's improvement, promote health and alleviate suffering, which is also a fundamental area of responsibility for the nurse. Aim: To describe experiences of how daily life has changed after a stroke from a patient perspective. Method: A literature study in which four autobiographical books about suffering from stroke have been analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis revealed three categories: Changes after stroke, The necessary assistance and Hope for the future. Conclusion: The study shows that suffering from stroke has negative consequences for the health and well-being of the affected individual. The results show that suffering a stroke causes major changes and that it can be experienced as life being quickly turned upside down. In the nurse's work with individuals affected by stroke, it is important to not only look at the physical experiences but also look at the mental and social experiences to get a holistic view.
