My reality not yours : A selection of patients’ delirium stories from ICU (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Critically ill patients are cared for in the intensive care unit to stabilize the disease state. Being cared for in the intensive care unit is both physically and mentally stressful for patients and can cause great suffering. Complications in intensive care can be a contributing factor to patients' delirium. In the stressful environment, patients develop hallucinations as well as visual, time and reality disorders, generally called delirium. In delirium, nurses 'ability to care for, respond to and reduce patients' suffering is made more difficult.

Aim: The aim was to highlight patients' perceived hallucinations during delirium while in an intensive care unit.

Method: A qualitative content analysis was used to analyze selected patient stories.

Results: Patients perceived a wide variety of hallucinations in their delirium. The results are presented in five categories which are named; patients' experiences of being in another place, hallucinations patients experience in a delirium, activities patients experience they perform in a delirium, staff participation in patients' delirium and patients’ perceived feelings in delirium. Hallucinations that are experienced are either of an unpleasant or of a neutral nature.

Conclusion: Nurses working in intensive care units and other medical departments need knowledge about patients' experiences of delirium and what can cause the condition. The knowledge is necessary to treat and care for patients and thus alleviate suffering.
