Abstract [en]

Background: Social media is today being used by adolescents to stay socially active, take part in friend’s activities and to find support in community groups. Self-esteem and a sense of belonging are both different causes which affect our mental health. Mental illness is an individual experience of emotions and common symptoms are anxiety, worrying or problems sleeping.

Aim: To describe adolescents and young adults' experiences of social media and its impact on mental health.

Method: The study was conducted as a literature review. Articles of qualitative and quantitative methods were chosen to answer the aim of the study.

Findings: The results included both negative and positive experiences related to the use of social media and its impact on mental health. Four themes were designed to describe the findings: A platform for community support, an unintentional addiction, the secondary suffering and the feeling of not being good enough.

Conclusion: It appears that the use of social media provides both positive and negative aspects. Social media can provide positive effects regarding adolescents and young adults well-being. On the other hand, social media might also provide negative outcomes when it comes to mental health.
