How are Swedish office workers affected by the new normal during and after the covid-19 pandemic? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The societal restrictions posed by the Covid-19 pandemic have forced many office workers to work from home to a greater extent than ever before. “The new normal” as a concept has long been discussed in research and is largely about many office employees being given the opportunity to work from home. Working hours are becoming more flexible and many organizations are adapting to technological developments that enable new ways of working. We have chosen to investigate what the new normal means for Swedish officeworkers during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. We have conducted a study by interviewing office workers in three different organizations. We investigated how office workers have experienced working from home and investigated how problems - around collaboration, performance, home office design and border issues - affect the experience of working from home and how it affects work-related stress. The behaviors and experiences are analyzed by describing how employees move between the fields in Karasek and Theorell (1990) control, requirements, and support model (KKS model). The results that emerged in the survey show that the risk of ending up in a tense field during a change is high, but that employees can then move towards a relaxed and passive to an active field with the help of various forms of support and advice, which provides high control. New ways of working have formed during the past year and the employees express a desire for flexible ways of working even after the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, there is speculation that working from home could be optional in the future as the new normal progresses.
