School nurse’s health promotion work to prevent overweight among children : An interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The school nurses’ health promotion work within school has a focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle among the students. During the last 30 years overweight among children has more than doubled. Overweight during childhood increases the risk of psychical health and the risk of suffering from chronic diseases in adulthood. Children need support in making healthy choices and the school nurse may have a significant role in this.

Aim: To describe the school nurses´ experiences of the health promotion work to prevent overweight among children.

Method: A qualitative interview study was conducted in which seven school nurses participated. The analysis was carried out as a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.

Results: Study results showed that to promote health against overweight school nurses works through collaboration with other professions, both internal and external, and parents. School nurses promote health through conversations with students individually during health talk and open reception and during health education and puberty talk on group level.

Conclusion: The school nurses´ health promotion work to prevent overweight takes place in several different contexts from a salutogenic perspective with a healthy lifestyle in focus. “Lack” of time is seen as a challenge by school nurses as the aim is that all students should have the opportunity to achieve best possible and equal health.
