"Charging the social batteries on Zoom will not be the same as charging them in real life" : A qualitative study of students’ experiences of distance education in Covid-times (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Since March 2020, the Swedish Public Health Agency has issued recommendations that Swedish higher education institutions and upper secondary schools should conduct distance education as far as possible, due to Covid-19. This has meant that many university students have had to quickly switch to distance learning. The purpose of this study was therefore to explore the effects that may have arisen as a result of the acute transition to distance studies, in relation to the theories that formed the basis of the work - sense of coherence and subjective well-being. To investigate this, a qualitative approach was applied and semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten students who at the time of the interview have had distance-studies for about one year. The interviews were then analyzed through thematic analysis. The study's results and analysis show that there are effects that have led to more students having a reduced sense of context and subjective well-being. This has largely been due to reduced social interaction with regard to Covid-19, which has partly hampered motivation for the studies. The results also show that distance learning had a certain health impact for the students, as several students felt loneliness and anxiety.
