Experiences of support during breast cancer treatment : A qualitative literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In 2016, breast cancer accounted for approximately 30 percent of all cancer cases in Sweden. For those affected, the treatment is very stressful and affects not only the woman but also her partner, family and relatives. Aim: The purpose of this study is to shed light on experiences and support in breast cancer treatment from a patient perspective. Method: The method for this study is a literature study, based on four autobiographies. The analysis consisted of qualitative content analysis. Result: The results show that support is needed and that several different types of support occur. Mainly support from healthcare in the form of information, confirmation, being seen and listened to. The nurse´s roles for support from the healthcare system are primarily to be at hand. The support from the woman herself meant focusing on the joy of everyday life and the determination to fight and defeat the disease. The support from family and friends constituted the majority of support when relatives provided security. Conclusion: Support is experienced in breast cancer treatment, in several different forms. The important thing is to listen and confirm the woman´s own experience and let her receive support from her relatives during the period of illness.
