Midwive´s perceptions of what is valuable when giving advice to young people about contraceptive methods (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The sexual relations of young people have changed over time, and young people have varied knowledge of sex and society, which means that midwives need to individually tailor contraceptive counseling. It is also made evident that midwives provide different degrees of information in their counseling. Purpose: To visualize midwive´s perceptions of what is important when giving advice to young people about contraceptive methods. Method: The study was based on a phenomenographical research method with inductive approach. Semi-structured interviews with nine midwives were conducted in southern Sweden. Results: The midwives’ perceptions of what was important in contraceptive counseling presented in three descriptive categories and six perceptions: young people’s knowledge level is important; young people’s sexual habits need to be highlighted;  individual counseling is fundamental; young people’s participation in relation to contraceptive counseling;  the importance of mutual trust between midwives and young people; parents are not always optimal to talk about sex and socity with. Conclusion: To ensure that the contraceptive counseling is as clear as possible, midwives need to learn about young people’s knowledge of sex education to reach them with personalized information. The fact that young people’s requests regarding contraceptive method is taken into account, increases young people’s awareness and participation. In the counseling, midwives have an open approach which is characterized by their knowledge and competence.
