Abstract [en]

This theoretical paper reviews extant research to determine the impact of outsourcing on knowledge and learning in organisations. The study is based on a review of 41 peer-reviewed articles on outsourcing in relation to knowledge and learning. The literature has identified some opportunities related to outsourcing, such as a focus on core competences, organisational learning, shorter design cycle time and quality improvements. Risks have also been related to outsourcing, including knowledge loss, knowledge drainage, organisational learning problems, loss of trust, decreased quality and diminished innovation. The paper ends by highlighting a number of new research opportunities which in turn can contribute to the further development of the fields of outsourcing, knowledge, and learning.
