School nurses work with education on sexuality- and interpersonal relations (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research has shown that students often find the sexual- and interpersonal relation education in school to be deficient. Furthermore the methods and the content of sex and social education varies between schools. The competence of the school health team is often overlooked and not taken advantage of in the education. Health promotion is fundamental in the work of a school nurse to promote sexual health. In order to improve sexual health and the sexual education of students in general it is important to understand how school nurses work with education on sexuality- and interpersonal relations today. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe how school nurses work with sex and social education. Method: Eight interviews were conducted by e-mail and telephone with school nurses working with adolescents between ages 12-18. Data was analyzed using a qualitative meaning analysis. Results: The analysis demonstrated five themes; teaching in sex and social education demands knowledge, openness and adherence; the individual health interview opens up the opportunity to talk about sex and to educate the student; the meaning and the challenges when working with newly arrived immigrants and refugees, the school nurses willingness to talk about HBTQ and to ensure norm-critical approach is being used, and; To experience cooperation with other professions as something positive and desirable. Conclusion: The study may have contributed to a deeper understanding of how school nurses work with sexual- and interpersonal relation education. School nurses provide professional secrecy and teach based on the students' life world perspective, that can make school nurses an important part in the education. It would be valuable if the school nurses were more involved in the education, although they need to have more time to make it possible to prioritize that.
