Women´s experiences of living with breast cancer (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Bröstcancer är den vanligaste cancerformen och dödsorsaken bland kvinnor i Sverige. Sjukdomen har förödande konsekvenser som i många fall leder till fysiska och psykiska förändringar i kvinnors liv. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva kvinnors upplevelser av att leva med bröstcancer. Metod: En Litteraturbaserad studie där datamaterialet bestod av 13 kvalitativa vetenskapliga artiklar. Resultat: Ur analysen av datamaterialet framkom två teman; Känslomässiga reaktioner och Behov av vägledning med sex subteman. Konklusion: I samband med beskedet upplever kvinnor olika känslomässiga reaktioner som chock, förtvivlan, rädsla och oro. Sjukdomen leder till ångest, minskad självkänsla och avsaknad av kvinnlig identitet. Det är betydelsefullt att kvinnor får vägledning i form av stöd från sjuksköterskor som är avgörande för kvinnors hantering av sjukdomen. En positiv inställning till sjukdomen leder till att kvinnor hanterar sjukdomen på ett bättre sätt.

Abstract [en]

Background:Breast cancer is the most common form of cancerand the cause of death among women in Sweden. The disease has devastating consequences that generate in physical and mental changes in women's lives. Aim:The aim of thestudy was to describe how women experience living with breast cancer. Method: A Literature based study was chosen and 13 qualitative scientific articleswere analyzed. Result:From the data analysis two themes were found; Emotional reactions and Need for guidance, with six subthemes. Conclusion:In connection with the diagnosis, women experience different emotional reactions such as shock, despair, fear and concern. The disease leads to anxiety, decreased self-esteem and lack of female identity. It is important that women receive guidance in form of support from nurses that is crucial for women`s management of the disease and recovery. A positive attitude towards the disease helps women manage the disease better.
