"I wonder why no one reacted. No one reacted" : The experience of being sexually abused in your childhood (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, one fifth of the children are estimated to be victims of sexual abuse. The consequences of sexual abuse in childhood can lead to mental health such as self-harm, PTSD, anxiety and poor self-esteem. As a central part of student health, the school nurse has the task of detecting abuse among students.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of having been exposed to sexual abuse during childhood.

METHOD: Six blogs were analyzed using a qualitative method with inductive approach and meaning analysis.

RESULTS: Five meaning subjects were identified during the analysis process; Feeling guilty and shameful, experiencing flashbacks, to live with malaise, not being able to resist and having trouble with trust and intimacy as an adult. It appears that the informants suffer from guilt, shame and anxiety and poor well-being as a result of the sexual assaults. They have used selfharm, have flashbacks, and have difficulty with trust and proximity.

CONCLUSION: Being sexually abused in your childhood can lead to malaise and illness that accompanies the affected persons and affects them in adulthood. It is essential that the school nurse dares to approach this subject in their health promotion work with students when suspicion arises.
