Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Hepatitis C is the most common type of hepatitis in Sweden. Hepatitis C is most common with drug addicts, due to this fact there is much prejudice to this illness. It influences negative actions and attitudes towards HCV positive people from nurses; it also deteriorates the quality of care provided to them. Hepatitis C is a dangerous illness. Fear of catching the infection from patients, the stigma attached to hepatitis C and poor knowledge about illness leads to discrimination of patients. The purpose of this study is to describe nurses' experiences regarding caring for patients with Hepatitis C. A qualitative interview method was used. Ten nurses from two hospitals in the Skara region were interviewed for the study. Nurses responded to eleven questions in which they described personal experiences of caring for HCV positive persons. There are three categories and eight sub categories in the results: consciousness about prevention of infection (certainty, fellowman, safety, requirement of knowledge’s development); greater patients' vulnerability (sensibility, exposure); different of views among colleagues (neutrality and fear). The results of the analysis show that nurses require continuous information about the illness, although no relationships between knowledge score and attitudes towards people with Hepatitis C were found. The majority of nurse's cared for there patients in a positive manner, although they had witnessed colleagues' discriminating towards patients with Hepatitis C.
