Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness in children and adolescents has increased in recent years and the need to support children, who are in need of special support, has increased. Pupils with autism are at greater risk of suffering from mental illness, therefore it is of great importance that the school nurse has the knowledge of how to encounter these pupils. Objective: To elucidate factors that influence the school nurse's supportive function for pupils with autism. Method: As a method, a systematic review of literature was chosen. Results: Three main themes emerged from the analysis. These were: development of competence, collaboration and communication, obstacles and opportunities. From these main themes, several sub-themes were identified such as the need for knowledge, own initiatives, relationships with children and their families, collaboration with other professions, need of time, and necessity to create a calm and safe environment. Conclusion: The need for development of competence in working with pupils with autism is great and there is motivation and desire among the school nurses to develop their competence in this field.
